Warning for fat-shaming.

The ladies in the magazines were so pretty. They had shiny hair, smooth skin, white teeth and slim bodies. They were perfect. El flipped the page to a couple embracing each other. They both were very pretty too, the man handsome and looking at the woman with love in his eyes. She was beautiful, no wonder he wanted to be with her. Another page, another flawless woman.

“El, dinner’s ready!” Her mother told her from the kitchen.

She threw another longing gaze at the photo before discarding the magazine and hurrying to the kitchen, otherwise her mother would get impatient and start to yell at her.

Pasta once again with garlic bread. She sat down and began to eat. Her mother was smoking and looking by the window. Her face was hollowed, her mouth turned down, but she forced a smile when she noticed her daughter looking at her.

“You’re not eating, mom?”

“I already did, sweetie, don’t worry.”

El ate without arguing, hungry. On the TV, a model with high cheekbones and red lipstick smiled at the camera.

She ate everything her mother served her, which was too much, and her tummy felt hard and heavy, like rocks had settled in her stomach. She was puffing back to her room, disgusted with herself.

The ladies in the magazine probably didn’t eat as much, if they could stay slim and beautiful. El could grab handfuls of her stomach, her arms and thighs chubby. She wished she could pull away the fat and cut the excessive parts of her she didn’t want. Nobody would like her if she kept them, there was no one like her in the magazines or at the television. Maybe if she used scissors big enough, it would work.
